Cancun: An Option for Leisure in the "Snake's Nest"
Date: AUG 30, 2004
Other Reports

The Mexican coastal resort of Cancun, which means "snake's nest" in the Mayan language, is a very attractive proposal for multidestination tours in the Caribbean region, as it combines natural wealth with the modernity of its facilities.

A 22.5-km narrow strip of sand has become the tourist center of the region, featuring beaches that invite visitors to take a swim in their warm and crystal-clear waters.

The history of the region treasures a great influence from the Mayan culture, which reached its apogee in the Yucatan Peninsula before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in 1519.

In that regard, the region features more than 1,200 major archeological sites, many of which have benefited from restoration programs, although others still remain under the cloak of jungle vegetation.

Tourist programs include excursions to places of interest such as Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá, which give visitors the chance to appreciate the remnants of one of the world's most developed ancient societies.

Cancun has three well-defined zones. They are the city of Cancun, which has a population of more than 500,000, an Ecological Reserve, and the Tourist Center, which has some 20,000 hotel rooms.

Among Cancun's many choices are various hotels in the city for low-budget vacationers, all-inclusive hotels in the beach area, and the development of the time-sharing system.

A broad network of commercial establishments and more than 400 restaurants complete the options for leisure, providing offers ranging from popular fast-food establishments to exclusive restaurants specialized in Asian, Caribbean and Mexican cuisine, just to mention some.

The Mayan cuisine is also available for vacationers, including exquisite dishes like Moltuleños Eggs, Cochinita, Pibil Chicken and Lima Soup.

For those interested in Cancun's tourist attractions, one of the best options is the product known as TOUR EXPRESS ALL INCLUSIVE from one to seven nights, in addition to facilities to enjoy aquatic activities in the theme parks of El Garrafón, Xel-Há and Xcaret.

Cancun is regarded as a gateway to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, one of the main attractions in the Mexican Caribbean, since it covers a huge area of forests, lagoons, wetlands and ruins from ancient civilizations, and it is home to some 350 species of birds.

For all these, Mexico's popular tourist destination is one of the most demanded alternatives among millions of foreign vacationers who visit the country every year, as it is a perfect combination of traditions and culture with the modernity demanded by leisure.
