Varadero, the Cuban beach resort located in the western province of Matanzas, stands out for its 22 kilometers of excellent beaches where the warm waters are an irresistible attraction for tourism.

The sea bottoms in the abovementioned destination hold more than 40 types of corals, as well as a large diversity of fish, lobsters, shrimps, crabs, turtles, and close to 70 varieties of mollusks.

Undoubtedly, Varadero, as the main sun and beach destination in the island, stands out for the growing interest tourists are showing in the attractions of the area.

The abovementioned resort has 38 percent of the hotels in Cuba, with a lodging infrastructure above 20,000 rooms.

Likewise, the hotels are complemented by private houses for rent, government and private restaurants, as well as air and land transportation services.

It is important to mention that Varadero also has the largest golf court in Cuba (18 holes, par 72), which is located on the Peñas de San Bernardino, where the millionaire Irenne Du Port de Nemours had a private nine-hole golf court set up for his private enjoyment in an exclusive 180-hectare area, just a few meters from the coastline in one of the best beaches of the world.

The court was designed by the architect Les Furber, president of the Canadian company Golf Design Services, in a combination of styles including the classical, with wide streets demarcated by trees and wide greens with little protection.

Several marinas like Chapelin, Puertosol Dársena de Varadero and Gaviota guarantee the conditions and means for diving, with adequate boats, trained personnel, diving training centers, hyperbaric chambers and the necessary transportation service in emergency cases.

One of the most challenging diving options is in the so-called Hoyo Azul Ojo del Mégano, a huge cavern with 70 meters in diameter, where underwater rock walls, coral reefs and many multicolor schools of fish can be watched.

A comprehensive recuperation program to protect the coastline is being carried out in order to prevent the environmental impact of erosion.

The actions include the demolition of facilities that were built on the natural sand dunes of the beach and the artificial sand refilling in certain areas.

According to specialists, these constructions account for the erosion in over 400 beaches in the country and, just in Varadero, 19 of them have been demolished.

The action plan shows that there are still 21 constructions on the dunes along the 22 kilometers and 10 of them must be demolished in the second half of 2013.

The congress and convention tourist options are also increasing in Varadero thanks to the Plaza América International Conference Center, which has a plenary session hall with capacity for 600 people, and seven additional halls; this option is ideal for those programs seeking to combine work and leisure in a quiet and pleasant environment.
