Cuba: Tourism in a Young Province
Date: JUL 02, 2018
Other Reports

The province of Mayabeque, the youngest region in the Cuban archipelago, holds a wide spectrum of recreational options to delight national and foreign visitors.

The province is made up of 11 eastern municipalities of the former province of Havana, and its capital is San José de las Lajas.

The name Mayabeque comes from the river and the beach of the same name on the south coast, considered the first founding site of the town of San Cristóbal de La Habana in 1514.

For nature programs, the camping sites El Abra, Los Cocos, Las Caletas, La Laguna, Peñas Blancas and Playa Amarilla are available, facilitating camping and recreational options to hikers, including ecological tourism.

In the surroundings, special mention should be made of the Breezes Jibacoa Hotel, a four-star establishment designed for the enjoyment of couples and adults over 14 years of age.

A nearly pristine natural environment characterized by crystal-clear and calm waters makes this hotel a natural option that provides all the comfort to guests.

For vacationers, the most striking area of the territory are the beaches located about six kilometers from the town of Santa Cruz del Norte, which span from the Jibacoa River to Boca de Canasí.

It is a 9.5-kilometer strip of small and magnificent shores within coves, and crowned by heights and hills populated with dense vegetation.

Villa Trópico is another lodging facility that offers more than 150 rooms and options especially aimed at those who choose calm and contact with nature, including diving.

Along with Jibacoa, there are other beaches with excellent conditions such as Boca de Jaruco and El Abra, all with very good conditions for diving due to the quality of the sea bottoms.

In addition, Puerto Escondido and Peñón del Fraile offer visitors the chance to enjoy a beautiful seascape, with the presence of numerous oil and gas wells.

The crystalline and warm waters, as well as the coral sands, make these areas a privileged place for scuba diving and snorkeling, with underwater caves inhabited by a diverse fauna.

Coupled with this, the territory has a wide cultural tradition, which starts from the Afro-Cuban heritage, which is notable in cities like Güines and Bejucal.

Precisely, the so-called Charangas of Bejucal is one of the three most popular traditional festivals in the country, along with the Parrandas of Remedios and the Carnivals of Santiago de Cuba.

There are other attractions in the province, like the Gardens of Hershey, a natural place full of unrivaled ecological wealth and also known for the history and heritage associated with the well-known Hershey Sugar Mill.
