Other Reports

Cuba, a tourist destination par excellence in the Caribbean region, is betting on the diversification of its offers to consolidate the growing trend reported over the past few years.

In addition to traditional sun and beach options, Cuba is strongly promoting nature, circuits, nautical activities and culture, among other options.

It is also developing health tourism, which consists of medical programs and others to improve people's quality of life, in addition to improving the quality of services at all levels and places, including hotels, extrahotel establishments, airports and cruise terminals.

The strategy is also based on the presence of foreign capital, for which a portfolio of business opportunities with more than 100 projects was created.

Furthermore, growth in the tourism sector is complemented by an increasing number of airlines operating between Cuba and several destinations all over the world, as well as the dynamic development of the cruise industry.

On the other hand, the extrahotel sector is benefiting from the construction of golf courses like the one being built by the joint venture Carbonera S.A., with participation from Cuba and the British firm Esencia Hotels and Resorts.

That way, The Carbonera Club, Hotel and Golf will be built by the sea and will offer conference and show halls, restaurants, shops, sports facilities and a spa.

Precisely, the real estate projects linked to golf courses are one of the priorities in the portfolio of business opportunities in Cuba's tourism industry.

Predictions are favorable for Cuba's tourism sector, as 4.7 million foreign vacationers are expected to visit the country in 2017, 500,000 more than the initial estimates.

In the first semester of the year, Cuba was visited by more than 2.66 million foreign tourists, accounting for a solid growth of 23.2 percent on the same period in 2016.

Revenues from tourism during the period are estimated at 1.5 billion dollars, which represent a 9-percent increase compared to the same period last year.

At present, Cuba offers 67,769 hotel rooms, and that number is expected to rise to more than 100,000 by 2030 to meet the growing demand in the country's major tourist destinations: Havana, Varadero, the eastern province of Holguin, the northern keys and the city of Trinidad, in the central part of the Caribbean island..

As a complement, 2,000 restaurants are operating in the private sector, as well as some 22,000 rooms in private houses, most of which are located in cities of high cultural and historic value such as Viñales, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Camagüey, Baracoa and Santiago de Cuba.
