Cuba: Time for Tourism
Date: APR 25, 2016
Other Reports

The Cuban island, with more than three million tourists visiting its various leisure destinations each year, stands a stronghold of that activity in the Caribbean region.

Evaluations of specialized agencies realize the dynamic expansion of the sector in recent months, fueled by the process of normalization of relations with the United States.

The increasing flow of US citizens under the coverage authorized by the government of that country to travel to the island is complemented by the activation of other options that contribute to the arrival of vacationers.

In that long list of incentives include events such as the concert of the Rolling Stones, the shooting on Havana´s streets of scenes of Fast and Furious film production, combined with the visit of renowned figures of American culture.

Furthermore, is the inclusion of the island in the itineraries of Carnival after the signing of the contracts with Cuban companies linked to cruise tourism.

For the last step, the authorities of the Caribbean country authorized the entry and exit of Cuban citizens as passengers and crew of merchant ships and cruise ships.

In addition, it will gradually allow entry and exit of Cuban citizens, regardless of their immigration status, as passengers and crew on recreational craft.

Additionally, a pact was signed with a view to establishing at least one hundred regular daily flights between Cuba and the United States before the end of the year 2016, taking into account the importance of air access to the archipelago.

The island currently has 10 international airports, where planes of 54 foreign lines connect the country with about 70 cities in the world.

Also, new connections materialized, such as the return of the Spanish airline Iberia and the beginning of links from Beijing, China, direct to Havana with a stopover in Canada.

Meanwhile, the airline Neos has a major development program linked with Cuba by naming their aircrafts after cities in this country.

In this growing spiral, there are included new flights from other Spanish companies, plus Air Berlin, Condor, Eurowind and charter trips from Canada and Venezuela.

The extensive list of companies includes Aerocaribbean, Aeroflot, Air Canada, Air Caribes, Air Europa, Air France, Aeromexico, Bahamas Air, Blue Panorama, Cayman Airways, Commercial take off SA, Conviasa, Copa Airlines, Cubana de Aviacion, Iberia, Interjet, Lan Chile, Martinair, Taag, Taca, Tame and Virgin Atlantic.

Cuba has a network of 62,000 rooms in approximately 300 hotels across the country, of which more than 18,000 are managed by the private sector in localities of interest such as Viñales, Trinidad, Varadero and the capital.

Thus, tourism ranks as one of the most dynamic sectors in the national economy, along with the exports of services.
