The province of Cienfuegos, in central zone of Cuba, treasures in its geography a unique combination of nature, culture and history, in addition to a capital-city full of attractions and legends that give it the name of “The Pearl of the South”. Born in 1819 under the name of Villa of Fernandina de Jagua, had as its founder Louis D'Clouet and Pietre and took as its point of reference to a tree of Majagua, from which it drew the first blocks that formed the core of the population. Around that point, currently located in the Jose Marti Park were grouped the most important homes, official and religious institutions of the territory, with wide streets wich are plotted symmetrically.

Another relevant monuments like Tomas Acea Cemetery, is considered by specialists as the necropolis of major history in the country, with a gate at the entrance that rises as a replica of the Parthenon and which was built in 1926. Also, since 1902 has in its premises to the only existing Arc de Triumph in Cuba, to which is added the Theater Tomas Terry - one of the three most important on the island in the XIX century -, silent witness of the step of outstanding personalities of the universal art such as Enrico Caruso.

The most emblematic building of the territory is the Palacio de Valle, funded by a wealthy Spanish and built by an Italian engineer, combines in its architecture elements of the Gothic styles, romanesque, byzantine and baroque, with a preponderance of the Mudejar.

The environment of the city is complemented with the Cathedral Purisima Concepcion, famous for its altar - designed with the elegance of the Corinthian order - and by the Twelve Apostles in vitral, brought from France by the days of the Paris Commune. The province also has its treasure of nature in the Botanical Garden, which holds a centenarian history - was created in 1901 - with a collection of palms that figure in the ten most important in the world. With 97 hectares, is home of two thousand species (including the 70 percent exotic), with 23 varieties of bamboo, 65 jagüeyes and 280 of Palms and Palm cork.

In the area of located numerous natural attractions, where it emphasizes the Cienfuegos Bay, pillar of port development and tourism, in addition to the Sierra of Trinidad, with its maximum height in the Pico San Juan (1 150 meters above the sea level). In addition, an extensive river network covers the territory, with rivers as Damují, Caonao, Arimao, Yaguanabo and Hanabanilla, whose names are reminiscent of the aboriginal population which inhabited the Cuban archipelago more than five centuries ago.

Two dozens of Libraries, 11 museums, more than 30 cinemas and five theaters are added to the houses of culture, art galleries and monuments diverse to bring the best of the traditions of the territory to the visitors. Visitors come to the Cienfuegos are also with the reference to the character of Jagua, which - in accordance with the indigenous traditions - was the deity who taught the arts of fishing, hunting and agriculture.
